BACKYARD POISON

Colleen, Jeanie, and me
in back of hedge
gathering blood colored berries,
grape leaves, daisies and lilacs.

Smash berries on flat rock with stone,
scrape remains in sand bucket with stick.
add daisy petals one by one:

"He loves me; he loves me not."

Shake dew drops from grape leaves,
stir again with stick,
paint poison on lilac blossoms,
take to Billy's backyard.

“Breathe deeply, Billy, and die!"

Childhood play brought us together.
Friendship kept us together.
Colleen, Jeannie, and me.
Oh, and Billy, too.
Friends forever.
Gone, all but me.

"We really loved you, Billy.”
