A LITTLE DIFFERENT

They say (behind her back, of course),
“She’s always been a little different.”

Every morning and afternoon
she looks to the horizon.
Mornings she looks west;
evenings she looks east.

She finds value in being different.
East in morning there is only sunrise.
West in evening there is only sunset.
In reverse there is much to see and know.

From her valley, looking west,
she watches mesa transform
to golden umber from
sunrise over east mountains.

From her valley, looking east,
she sees mountains transform
to shades of brilliant rose from
sunset over west mesa.

From her valley, she looks west in morning
to dream of her future.
From her valley, she looks east in evening
to understand her past.

But, with knowledge of the present,
she rises from her past
and embraces her future,
even though she is a little different.
